It’s 2022 and this year will most likely be the tightest a lot of us will experience financially. On top of all our normal daily living expenses, we then have family and friends obligations. I am talking about birthdays, new arrivals, anniversaries and more. And the budget can come under a hideous strain if you are overseas. Do you send a gift a cop the postage which will probably cost more than the gift or do you organise something simple but extremely meaningful?
Mother’s Day is one of those occasions that rolls around every year. Not always on the same date in every country, but in May each year there is one day dedicated to Mum.
Mother’s day started in the early 1900’s, in the USA. What we celebrate today is known as the modern American version, started by Anna Jarvis. Since that time it has spread across the world and it either celebrated on the 1st or 2nd Sunday in May.
Yet mothers have been celebrated for centuries before the modern version took hold. Such as the Greek cult to Cybele, the mother of deity Rhea.
Today, Mother’s Day has become commercialised and the sentiment behind the gesture is sometimes lost. We know Mother’s Day is coming up because we are bombarded with TV commercials, social media advertisements, all reminding us that we have an obligation to give something to our mothers as an acknowledgement of their role.
